Overview

The emitted electrons from small amounts of tritium cause phosphors to glow so as to make self-powered lighting devices called trasers

In recent years, the same process has been used to make self-illuminating gun sights for firearms.

What Is Tritium ?

Tritium is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen with atoms three times the mass of ordinary light hydrogen atoms. Simply put: it glows for a long time.  The half-life of tritium is 12.5 years, giving a tritium micro sphere a usable life of more than 15 years.

Tritium requires no external batteries or light and is a safe, reliable way for a shooter to obtain a superior sight picture in low-light conditions. These sights are a tremendous aid in delivery of precise and accurate fire at night and in low light conditions.

Night sights are identifiable by radioluminescent capsules installed into front and rear sight bodies. Decay of Tritium H3 creates soft beta rays that, when they strike the phosphor particles that coat the inside of the glass microsphere, are converted to visible light.

Tritium's half life (the time required to reduce the illumination level by 50%) is about 12.5 years. With a functional life exceeding 15 years.

MMC’s P-T Multi-Colored Tritium Insert Configuration System:

The needs of modern day law enforcement require absolute expedited fire. In a world when every second counts, sight acquisition means everything. Development of the P-T Multi-colored 3-Dot System were premised on a concept that three green dots all the same level of brightness could exhibit problems for the shooter, which under stress and in low light conditions might precipitate confusion, distraction and delay in sight alignment. Speed of response and accuracy can literally mean the difference between life and death.

In evaluating 3 green dot systems, the primary configuration of other night sight manufacturers, the shooter has no real factor that will differentiate the front sight green dot from the rear sight rear dots. A time consuming thought process is in order. Under stress, the dynamics of the mind and its vision complements operate on a very "shaky" guideline. The front dot could and has been lined up to the left or right of the rear dots in stress fire conditions. Another inherent problem to take into consideration regarding one color systems is that the eyes are attracted to the color green in darkness. Green is the most visible color on the night color spectrum; therefore the tendency to initially focus on the rear sight is high. We train to go to the front sight as quickly as possible. Looking to the rear, sorting dots could cost a life.

Miniature Machine Corporation has the solution to these low light problems with a new approach and application of  3-dot configurations, P-T (Practical and Tactical) Multi-Colored 3-Dot Systems. The design centers on a green front sight dot, complemented by subdued yellow, orange, red, or blue dots in the rear. This is a dynamic innovation. Keeping in mind that we want to locate and identify the front sight, the eyes are strongly driven to the green dot. There is no confusion or distraction concerning the location of the front sight. The thought process associated with identification and sorting is eliminated. The Multi-Colored 3-Dot configuration creates a vivid three dimensional triangulation effect. This effect force-vectors your vision to the apex of the triangle formed by the dots. All green dot systems appear flat and lack dimensional dynamics.

MMC Bar-Dot System

The "Bar-Dot" is designed for the stressed encounter. By requiring concentration on just the target, the sight's front dot and the rear bar, The "Bar-Dot" system accommodates this limitation.
The 3-dot systems are adequate during the day because they help to align the tops of the sights faster. But at night the top of the sight cannot be seen, so there is nothing to line up except the dots themselves. This can be confusing when rapidly aligning the dots for windage and elevation.
Use of night sights occurs in situations in which instantaneous response is required. Law enforcement officers and the military require the most reliable sights on the market today, as they might not have a second chance. Their lives and the lives of others are on the line.
P-T "Bar-Dot" and Multi-Colored 3-Dot Tritium Night Sights are currently in service with government agencies and police departments through the world.

Of course, if you feel comfortable with a standard three dot configuration all the same color, MMC will certainly accommodate you.
